Is solar still worth it in Virginia in 2026?

The federal homeowner tax credit has ended for systems installed after 2025-12-31, so it is no longer part of the math for a new Virginia installation.

What decides the value now is your electric bill, how much sun your roof or yard gets, and the net metering terms from your utility. Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power each have their own rules, and the State Corporation Commission (SCC) has ruled on both.

Virginia has no state solar tax credit, but residential systems of 25 kW DC or less are exempt from state and local property tax. We do not quote savings numbers on this page. A solar specialist reviews your bill and your home during the quote and shows you what applies at your address.

Federal homeowner credit

The IRS states that the residential clean energy credit (Section 25D) will not be allowed for any expenditures made after December 31, 2025. The expenditure is treated as made when the installation is completed. Paying before 2026-01-01 does not save a system that is installed later.

Ground mount or roof mount solar panels in Virginia

Panels can go on your roof or on a frame set in the ground. Our portfolio includes rooftop systems and ground-mounted arrays.

Roof mount

Panels attach to your existing roof. It works well when the roof is in good shape and faces the sun without much shade from trees or buildings.

Ground mount

Panels sit on a frame in your yard or field. It can be an option when the roof is shaded or faces the wrong way, and when you have open land with good sun.

Virginia homes range from suburban lots to larger rural properties. If you have open, sunny land, ask about a ground mount when you request your quote.

Which one fits is a question about your specific property. The specialist who reviews your quote request looks at your roof, your land and your energy use before suggesting either.

Battery backup

LightSkye is a Tesla Certified Powerwall installer. A battery stores the extra solar energy your panels make so you can use it when you need it, such as during a power outage, at night, or at peak utility rate hours.

The Powerwall offers whole-home backup capability and is managed through the Tesla app. Its Storm Watch feature charges the battery automatically before severe weather.

You do not have to add a battery to go solar. If you want one, say so when you request your quote. Read more about home battery backup.
